Faculty Book Club Success

Our Middle School faculty book club met for the first time last week with 13 members in attendance. It's amazing to me that the avid readers in our school were so eager to meet and share the latest novel that caught their interest. As a small stressed out faculty, I thought this might be a one time event. To my surprise they want to continue to read and meet for more discussions. Everyone was in agreement to continue to read some of the latest young adult literature and three titles were suggested. An email went out to the entire faculty with the suggested titles and summaries of the books. In less than four days those interested were eager to know the results of the email. Had I known how easy it was to make some reading suggestions and get an overwhelming positive response, I would have started a faculty book club many years ago. Once the students found out the faculty was reading The Huunger Games by Suzanne Collins, they were very interested in reading "that book the teachers were reading". Our second book to discuss is Unwind by Neal Shusterman. Our discussion group has expanded to include administrators from the Central Office. It's just another way to promote reading and get everyone excited about the process. It's just some food for thought in the midst of all the budget cut talk.
